When I first saw the trailer of "The Purge" I was extremely excited for the movie. The themes of it, the sheer idea, the concept, everything should be in place and time to make that movie an epic take on utopia as a cover of a dystopian society. And yesterday I went to see the movie.
Picture belongs to Universal. |
The movie is centered about a family living in the America of 2022. Before these years crime has over rolled America, and the new founder fathers (we assume companies) decided to create a yearly 12 hour time called the purge ind which nearly every crime is legal including murder, rape and theft. but there are no emergency facilities open during that time. Only some high government workers are protected. The Purge is believed to release the peoples problems, and it seems a though the crime statistics from under 1% proves the inventors right. the family around which the movie is centered is a wealthy one, where the father is selling security systems that lock the house completely. They life in a good neighborhood where some of their neighbors think this family doe's not deserve the wealth they have since the whole neighborhood bought security systems from them. When the night comes, and the house is secured, the son of this family opens the house for a man on the flee from some purge participants. They are now eager to get that men, and if necessary run down the house, which they then do.
During the movie some of them characters get what they deserve, others show their true colors, neighbors do not only bake cookies and take packages for one and former threats turn out to be life savers.
Sounds good? Well then I am sorry to tell you that the camera handling was shakier than in "Blairwitch Project", the story a bit flat, the actors sometimes not that believable and the general implementation was thirsty for some good results. But all in all I would give the purge 5 out of 10 stars since from an interpretational matter it gave good material.
