All about the icons of pop culture. Including art, music, TV series, movies and fashion. Queer in nature, straight forward in its approach and classical in an unconventional manner. From review to preview, I'll talk about it, analyze it and celebrate it! Icon Art Marilyn loves pop culture.
An icon is someone who makes an effort. Art makes an effort. Therefore art is an icon. Marilyn Monroe was and is an icon and a work of art as well. Hence Marilyn Monroe and art have a nature in common. Icon - Art - Marilyn is iconic.
Hey yall! As you do know by now I am a huge fan of everything concerning the theories of gender, sex, queer, feminism and performance. And as I am very secure in the texts that surround the theories I am tempted to get the whole thing to the next level: reality.
During last Tuesdays LGBT social night we dressed up as a rainbow, and of course, I was in team red. Besides my narcicistic wish to win best dressed, yes I am a bit vain, I also made the whole eening an exciting experiment. As I dressed up, and looked more and more of a mixture of fucked up dirty drag queen and glam rock experiment, I thought about what the color red represents in the LGBT flag. Of course it represents life but also sexuality. And, the whorry, slutty and cunty person I am, I bought a whip, with a heart shaped end, to complete my outfit for the evening. Covered in red glitter, dolled up with lip stick, eyeliner, red paint and tons of red lipstick I had a close look at my actual outfit. I wore a red shirt, burgundy red pants and my cherry red Dr. Martens boots, and yes they are the same Miley wore in the Wrecking Ball video. I actually looked like a mixture of a dominatrix and busted gender blender. AWESOME!
As you can see, Dita was everything else then shy.
And now, let me build yu a bridge to where I am commig from right now academically. My dissertation is going to be on the use of S&M i pop culture, mainly in thee different types of works. These three are "Venus in Furs" a novel by Leopold von Sacher Masoch, published in 1870, SEX by Madonna, yes I mean the 1992 published super scandalous coffe table book, and the 2012 released 5 minute short film FAME by Lady Gaga which is also a commercial for her perfume Fame.
And to get better understanding of why Madonna put up the figure of Dita in her book sex, I thaught that for this night, my name could be Dita as well. I introduced my outfit to my friends as: "My name is Dita, I will be your mistress tonight!". Very Madonna, very erotica and due to my outfit and masquerade very much gender fuck. Below you ca see the pictures of Ditas kisses and lipstick writings on everyone, cause "Dita is one everyone."
As a result I can say that putting on a persona and do something with it is extremely liberatig and very empowering. But at the same time I can imageine that the character in itsself is a very intimidating one.
And of course I want to give a big big big thank you to all my amazing friends who have allowed Dita to kiss, draw on and whip them. You guys seriously are amazing!
I know that sometimes I bitch and moan about Madonna and her work or sometimes her personality. But I actually really love Madonna and her work! And the last piece of work by Madonna has really been a huge bang for me! It has been a real thing and blast to watch it.
The thing is called # secretproject and is a 17 minutes film that is kept in balck and white. The film was directed by Steven Klein, and features Madonna in many BDSM related sces, in a jail, shooting people, in the darkness and beeing carried away. The movie is a campaign against homophobia, against bigotry and against the restriction of speech and artistic freedom. We see a hint into the direction of Putin, Russia, the church and hate speech. If you havent seen it yet: watch it below!
We all knw that this video is basically a typical collection of what Madonna stands for, and in basic it is a sum up of what Madonnas career content wise and visually like ia all about! But it realy has potential to make an impact and get people thinking. And Madonna sure has the possibilities to spread its message and make it actually work. And now let me tell you in detail why it actually is so amazing and why it brings activism to a next level. One of the very first sentences around human behavior is "The enemy is not out there, the enemy is within." Actually this is not one of the newest and catchiest things, but its one that has some meaning to it, and by some I mean much! because actually the human condition and everything related to it is a construct that comes from within. And so we really have to fight the enemy in ourselves. As well Madonna cites some director by saying: "All you need for a movie, is a gun and a girl!"
As the movie goes on Madonna says that wen she was on her tour she saw "a lack of desire, like a plague." and I cans to relate to what she is saying. There lately has been a lack of compassion and fire in activism around LGBT things and stuff. As well Madonna raises the question of what it takes for something or someone to be taken seriously. And the question of when to be taken serious is an important one when it comes to activism of any kind. As well Madonna questions her point as a woman and a female performer. She says "Instead, I am a woman. I am blonde. I have tits and an ass, and an insational desire to be nudist. Come on baby, show us your ass! Shake it for us baby! Do that dance you do so well for us, baby!" and therby she actually hits the poit of it all. even for her as an iconic part of pop music history and pop icon she is still out there beeing missjudged and objectified by men. And that might be a part of the need to raise the question when to take someone and something serious. And by "History repeats itsself, don't you see a pattern her?" its clear that Russia is on the top of Madonnas list of places with a need for change.
The moment from there on it even gets better. Madonna gives a real definition why there is a need for the revolution and why Madonna wants to start it. "I dont feel save, lots of people don't feel save. Thats why I wanna start a revolution. But this revolution will not be televised, it will not be on the iternet, it won't be an app availible on your iPhone. You won't be able to download it. This will be the revolution of thinking for yourself, having your own opinion and not giving a damn about waht people say. This will be a revolution of enquioring further. Of not worrying about winning other peoples approval, of not wishing you weresomeone else, but perfectly intend to be who you are, someone unique, rare and fearless." - Wow. That, for me, is something that actually could come from a philosophy book. I mean it basically is all true. This revolution Madonna wants us to spread is all about beeing your self and no one else. But not only to be but also to make others be themselves. Followed is this by Madonna condemming labels. "Fuck labels. I hate labels. We are all in this ship together sailing like a burning spear across the sea, burn baby, burn!".
And, as if the film hasn't got enough gunpowder in it already she sets one stone on top by explicitly calling out criticism and hate based on religion as wrong. "You can not use religion to treat other people badly, you can not use God's name to treat other people badly." Well, I could not agree more with you Madonna, because if there is a tyical pop icon that embraces christianity AND contorosersy and acception than it is Madonna. The last real buster sentence of the video is "I know what you are thinking: If you can't stand the heat. get out of the kitchen! But it's too late, I am in the kitchen and the burner is on full blaze!" Hell yeah! And she should stand ther cause she has been there for ages and done a good job!
The whole video basically is about the question of madness and genious side to side, activism and taing action, how to treat people, how to be ative, why to care and how to care, when to care and how to be heared. And visually we see that Madonna still manages to make the ugly, the violence, and the anger glamorous. The darkness as a creature of gamerous light. Get it?
Photos and photography are a part of how we keep memories and important moments in our life. With pictures we keep things from our past and preserve what we love. History in progress often is documented with photographs, some of these photographs have gone around the world and reached an iconic status of themselves. And some photos capture more then what meets the eye.
Last time a picture of Nirvana and RuPaul has been featured, as this time I will give you my thoughts on one of these magical pop culture moments that 00 kids will never forget, because we have seen them! When Britney and Christina Aguliera were on the peak of their careers and Madonna was the highest point of the pop triangle, you know these were the days without Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, the VMA's were a platform for scandal! And hell was it scandalous when Madonna kissed Britney and Christina during her performance of "Like A Virgin". Man, that was a shocker But seriously. From todays position that was not that much of a shocker. It as controversial ten years ago since it was lesbianism and genderbending in one, but today it is a cold poof in the dust. But a rememberable one! FYI: What is funny is that the media really focuses on the kiss between Madonna and Britney, not so much between Madonna and Christina.
"All hail the queen!", "There is only one queen, and that is Madonna!" or so else could be the mantra of Madonnas latest project: her MDNA concert film. It had its premier on the 18th of June in New York city. The project will first be released on Epix, and the promoting has already begun! So Madge lovers: Get ready for a big concert event!
Madonna attended the premier in a Dolce and Gabbana tuxedo with a matching elegant hat and one sparkly glittery glove. She completely pulled off the world famous and gender bending Marlene Dietrich look. She finished the whole look with a very pale foundation on her face, blood red lips and cracking a little smile, just like her fashion icon Marlene. It seems that the aging, but still fabulous pop diva, might not be the only queen anymore, but still pulls of high quality work and outfits.
And that is not all: if you compare Madonna and Marlene they have more in common than the M in their names.. way more. Just like Marlene, also Madonna is in a terrible fear of aging. Dietrich did not even leave the house without masking herself. But, as you may have noticed: Madonna does not just sit there and waits for the wrinkly end of the story, no. That would not be MDNA style! She, allegedly, has gotten herself some botox. And I say: Honey you did right! No single fuck to give t the haters.
But definitely Madonna looked stunning at the MDNA premier, which will be, for me, the concert thing of 2013, unless some other artist will be releasing some stuff, but even then to beat the MDNA concert film will be amazing, just as her look. What is so special about this look is, like i already sad, its gender bending. Even though the effect and the way how to do it is well known and kind of already done, it still gets me, since it is so extremely classical and history proven.
So make sure to check out the trailer and watch the concert when its broadcasted
Hey you out there! I am a huge fan of award shows, in particular if my favorites win. Although I just was reading a live report and not watching the actual event I have enjoyed the Billboard Music Awards.
For me the best of such a show are the performances, but since i haven't seen them this year i had to look up who performed. And pretty much there was no performance there for me. I mean there were Bruno Mars (I think he is good, but I don't care for his music), Selena Gomez (Seriously? She is considered a singer?), Chris Brown (This dude is not worth it, i mean seriously you women beating asshole?), Taylor Swift (Cant stand her!), JLo (I mean who cares?) and Pitbull (Whose music is the CRAP!). The only notable one would be Prince, but i kinda don't really love him either. And not to talk about talentless lil Justin Bieber (Who I don't consider an artist since he does not even write his own songs, and does not know how to behave. Well, but something he must be doing right.). So to the award winners now:
The biggest winner of the night was, like i would have predicted it: Taylor Swift. She took home 8 awards including Top Artist (Where I would have picked Rihanna from the nominees), Billboard Top 200 Album (Which Adles 21 deserved much more, and I'm not even a real fan of Adele) and Best Female Artist (Which she actually deserved, since she was nominated along Britney, Katy P, Rihanna and Christina - I don't give a shit i cant sing - Aguilera). Rihanna was the second biggest winner with R&B Song of the Year for Diamonds (Which was a good pick), R&B Album of the Year for Unapologetic (I don't get it where Unapologetic is R&B, but its okay with me, although I would have loved to see Frank Ocean take home this one) and as the R&B Artist of the year (Rihanna is not R&B, Only because she is not Caucasian does not make that Pop and Electronic bitch R&B!!!).
Carly Rae (I don't give a shit about your so called "music") Jepsen, Justin (for shure is a lesbian) Bieber, Nicki (Still can't sing live, but I love her music) Minaj and One (Confusing that they are still around,) Direction each earned 3 awards, some of them deserved some not. The biggest surprise for me was that Madonna took home 3 awards. She was nominated for 3 and won these 3! She took home Dance album of the Year (Which, even though MDA has its weak spots, she, in my opinion, deserved. But the others would have deserved this award as well.), Dance Artist of the Year (Which sorry Madge, should have gone to Swedish House Mafia) and Top Touring Artist.
The Category Top Touring Artist, for me is very important. I mean She was nominated along amazing Coldplay, Mother Monster Lady Gaga, legendary Bruce Springsteen and Roger (Who the fuck is he?) Walters. All would have deserved the award except for Walters. Then I prefer huge shows, since they are ten times more "showy" and difficult. So this leaves Madonna and Gaga. And Madonna just makes her Tours so successful (in commercial sense) since tickets cot 300 $! And Se "only" did 88 shows. Gaga did 98 of over 110 shows and then had to stop due to hip surgery. But anyways: I liked the MDNA Tour and I will get the Concert DVD! But i would have loved to see Gaga win this!
Some of you out there maybe know the infamous tweet Cher tweeted saying: "WTF is MDNA?" I personally loved it, and haven`t had any problem with having a big laugh at Madonna for that. (Even though I love Madonna). But that is not the thing, The thing is that a British smart person had a genius idea to start a YouTube empire known as Charlie Hides TV.

What he does is basically drag. He dresses up as the great divas and icons of (pop)culture. His repertoire includes pop goddess Cher, queen of pop Madonna, new queen of pop Lady Gaga, show business legend Liza Minelli, newcomer diva Lana del Rey, comedy icon and legend Joan Rivers, barbara "the nose" Streisand and many more. Also he has created some characters of his own like "Pop Shizzle" hostess "Laquischa Jonez" and a manager. What he does with them is putting them into certain situations, music video parodies and letting them attend at "Divas Anonymous" meetings. He even has created a prayer for the divas at the "DA" meeting. The prayer is as follows: "God grant me the serenity to accept that
younger divas have taken my place. The courage to turn down six figure offers
to appear on reality TV and the wisdom to not be seen in public without
make-up. Gay men." So to let you know what sort of video he makes i have gathered my favorites here for you:
Charlie here impersonates Cher and does some of the crazy catchlines the diva herself has used throughout the years. But he also did many jokes on his own and its actually really funny. But he always pays homage to her, since he is a big fan of Cher. Best is that he does look a little like her and that he does a great impersonation of Chers voice. The catchphrase of his Cher definitly is: "Whooooooo?"
Here Charlie puts Gaga and Madonna into a duet and instead of just singing they just sing against each other. And that is quite funny. Actually it is very cool to see that Charlie does it all by himself. And he really has taken on the Madonna - Lady Gaga feud. In some videos we see Madge and Gags exchanging admiration for one another, that in the end they just do it for publicity! The catchphrase of Madonna would be. "You are reductive!" and Gaga's would be "Your so old!" To see the rest of Charlies repertoire you have to go on YouTube and look for yourself. So go ahead and dive in to the world of Charlie Hides TV.
